TATTING

IMAGE SOURCE Hey, friends hope you all are having a great time. The first handicraft technique which I have chosen to share with you is TATTING. Please do not get confused with Tattoo (the body ink art) or Tutting (the dance form). Tatting is an ancient thread work of handcrafting beautiful laces by using series of knots and loops or hitches. If you search on the web, there are loads of images showcasing how these laces were luxuriated by women in ancient time.
They use to wear it like a dress collar, or rather attach them around textile for enhancement, placements of tatted mats (doilies) were magnificent, even tatted motifs were framed for wall decorations. It’s quite hard to admit that a simple thread art can look so graceful in all forms.

Tatted accessories look delicate and elegant, and at the same time, this art form is too convenient and portable that one can do it anytime anywhere. I am saying this because, when I was in Germany I had to travel a lot to reach my workplace. So to pass my time I use to carry my tatting supplies in a wee pouch and work on my Tatting projects on my way to work and back home. So tatting can be your roommate or travel companion deprived of any extra space demand.
Tatting is an appealing art and can turn into a beautiful addiction, those who already know this art will agree with me. What say tatters?

I got introduced to this lovely technique accidentally. Years back, my mom asked me to help her with cleaning, as usual. While I was sorting the drawers I found a beautiful pink lace kept with a leaf-like looking cracked spool. I asked my mom about it and she told me, that the lace was made by her. So there was no question afterword, she had to teach me. And I had my first tatting lesson from my mom who is left-hander and using a broken shuttle. This was the only time I was thankful to my mom for asking me to clean the drawers.
My mom love to teach whatever she can, she has always been motivating and pushing us to try something new. But there is still a mystery: "Ma how do you cook delicious meals so quickly, please teach this magic trick as well."
Tatting is of three types, depending on the tool which is being used:
  1. Shuttle Tatting - using a leaf-like looking spool called shuttle. In German, it’s called Occhi / Shiffchenarbeit (Shiffchen – small boat & artbeit – work) which means work of small boat. In this case shape of shuttle relates a boat.
  2. Needle Tatting – a specially designed needle, which has a blunt tip and same thickness from tip to end (thread eye).
  3. Cro-Tatting – for this a crochet hook is used which has a uniform thickness throughout.
  4. Tatting Chain Bracelet
    Chain Bracelet / Hand-flower
  5. Finger Tatting – just use fingers to make a tatted pattern. Used often by tatters to finish the pattern when the thread is running out.
The name and tools are different, but any pattern can be made with all of these. The way of working stitches do vary, still, all techniques are possible with any tool. Except finger tatting, as we just club it with other techniques to facilitate in finishing our work. It is quite slow and time-consuming.

Now I am pretty sure after knowing about this technique you would be curious to learn. So without wasting any more time on chit-chats let note down the Supplies required for Tatting.

Thanks and enjoy crafting
